Math Recovery

Pathways to numeracy for every child!

The Math Recovery Intervention program focuses on early intervention before students fall further behind their peers.  Teachers identify children's current strategies and understandings to adjust activities and settings accordingly.  While targeted for early intervention, Math Recovery may also serve older elementary students.

Assessment tools and diagnostics provide a comprehensive method to detail each child's number knowledge profile.  Assessments encompass addition, subtractions, multiplication, division, and related number concepts.  Math Recovery lessons are:  explicit, systematic, inquiry/problem-based.  The lessons are video-taped and reflections are made based on evidence seen for the Guiding Principles.  The goal is to learn from the child through "kid-watching" and guide their instruction based on the reflections made through observation and discussions.

About Math Recovery

Math Recovery Mission and Vision

Math Recovery and Intervention (RTI)

"Helping kids understand WHY math works the way it does (w/o formulas and rules)"

-US Math Recovery first began in 1992 and is based in constructivist thinking - letting students figure out their own strategies through cutting-edge instruction with hands-on experiences.
-Math Recovery typically services the bottom 25-30% of 1st graders (covering 8-12/year).
-AVMR, SNAP are effective Tier 1 and 2 instruction for classroom teachers
-MRIS can be used for either Tier 2 or Tier 3 instruction (groups/1:1).

If a student is not successful early in the school experience, negative feelings toward mathematics and a lack of self-confidence can emerge. Over time, as the knowledge gap
widens, finding success becomes even more difficult. The aim of Math Recovery is to provide these students with assistance before they experience too much failure. The goal is to help these students advance to the level at which they can successfully learn with their peers.”
